　　多年來，記者和Carly Simon的歌迷都很好奇這首歌曲中的男主角到底是誰？誰敢那麼自負地把Carly Simon的心耍得團團轉？……

　　擁有一付低音迷人歌喉的Carly Simon（1945年6月25日-），原名Carly Elisabeth Simon，生於紐約河谷附近的布朗克斯，喜愛古典音樂的父親Richard L. Simon，經常在家裏扮演蕭邦和貝多芬，母親Andrea Louise Simon也是一名歌手，家中有兩個姐姐Joanna 和 Lucy，及弟弟Peter。Carly從小受到家庭的音樂薰陶，1964年與姐姐 Lucy組成The Simon Sisters，並且灌錄了3張專輯，當中的「Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod」較為人所知。

　　Lucy結婚另組家庭後，1971年Carly Simon開始了她個人的演唱生涯，在 Elektra推出首張同名專輯，單曲「That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be」很快打入了Billboard 流行榜第10位，並於同年獲得葛萊美獎（Grammy Award）的最佳新人獎。

　　1972年，Carly Simon推出她個人精典代表作「You're So Vain」，為她的演唱事業帶來了最大的成就，不但在Billboard流行排行榜上穩坐冠軍達3星期，成為百萬暢銷白金唱片，並獲得葛萊美獎最佳單曲和最佳流行女歌手的提名。這一年她與同為歌手的James Taylor結婚，在1972~1979年間，兩人合作過無數歌曲，Carly並在James的歌曲中擔任合聲。

　　1977年她為 James Bond電影『The Spy Who Loved Me』主唱主題曲「Nobody Does It Better」，此曲也成為她音樂事業第二張最好成績的單曲，得到 3星期 Billboard流行榜的亞軍。

　　1972年登上 Billboard 流行榜冠軍的「You’re So Vain」，歌詞描寫一位追求過Carly Simon的花花公子的事，這也成為日後Carly Simon要製造新聞時的主要話題。多年來記者及樂迷都很感興趣，到底歌曲的主人翁是誰？

　　當年Carly Simon長得美艷動人，緋聞不斷，James Taylor、Mick Jagger、Cat Stevens、Warren Beatty及 Kris Kristofferson都榜上有名，中間還發生過一段小插曲。

　　傳說，有次Carly Simon和James Taylor兩人結伴去英國玩，Taylor把自己的好朋友Mick Jagger（滾石樂團主唱）介紹給Carly Simon認識，誰知道Carly Simon竟然與Mick Jagger交好，還差點因此鬧出人命（當時Mick Jagger已婚）。

　　有訪問曾追問Carly Simon，該曲男主角否是 James Taylor，因為當時他們才結婚一個月，但為Carly否認。亦有許多人認為應是指Warren Beatty；Warren Beatty在聽到這首歌曲時曾致電給她，幽默地感謝對方所寫的歌曲，然而 Carly仍沒有承認。數十年來Carly Simon在任何訪問中都守口如瓶，更為歌曲增添了神秘感。
